The CD was recorded in 2001 and has taken until now to be released to the general public. This mouth watering project has been rumoured for some time and the cogniscenti, those who have bought the earlier releases , those lucky enough to have seen the many concerts in California have been pestering the more aware sources. Typically the album exceeds expectations.

As ever the group presents like a big band due to the inspired arrangements of Bob Florence, Kim Richmond, Jackson Stock, Anthon Wilson and Roger Neumann. To say this is the best album yet, tends to demean the original releases. If this one has a thousand stars, the others have 999!!! It is a wonderful body of work. For Phil Norman to have his dream fulfilled like this is unbelievable. I would not be surprised, if he sheds a tear or two when he realises what he has done. These are important albums, a body of extrordinary work that will be referred to long after we have gone.

The selection here is even more adventurous that before, that is not to say that it does not swing, that lyrical content is sacrificed, the group swings ferociously displaying all the power and dynamics you would expect from an 18+ piece big band. Often the more subtle writing of a big band arranger is so completely inter-laced with the ensemble that you enjoy the effect but do not realise the artistry that has contributed to the impact. Rather like opening up a watch that is ticking away and watching the actions of all the levers and cogs, being amazed at the intricacy, the skill of the craftsman who put it all together. This is never more evident than with the remarkable arrangement four movements of Johnny Richard's CUBAN FIRE by Kim Richmond.
