BUDDY RICH AND HIS BAND - DVD VIDEO

THE LOST "WEST SIDE STORY" TAPES

Lightyear: 54713-2 -Distributed by Warner Bros & Wea in the USA

There must be someone out there who was not aware of the much sought after " Mr. Drums "double LP, then a compact disc and a VHS video that all featured a concert in 1985. It was staged on a night club style set, in a studio, in San Francisco, with an invited audience. The performance was mooted as being the final recorded and filmed work by the 67 year old drummer. There were two sets dubbed the "Channel One Suite" Set and the one subject of this presentation the "West Side Story" set.

Sadly the onset of new technology coincided with the destruction of these historic tapes. So, any plans to digitise, put on DVD and so on, evaporated.

Surprisingly the surviving masters were recoverable and some extraordinary sound engineers were able to not only rescue the footage, but restore the sound and video to the point where you wonder whether it was all a ruse to stimulate interest - as if that would be needed!

The result is a fascinating performance in sparkling video and audio high fidelity, and the 'bonus items' that one has come to expect. There is commentary from Marie and Cathy Rich; interviews, enthralling background footage and some rare family photographs.

The main feature runs for 60 minutes and the total DVD running time is 115 minutes .

This and the 'Channel One Suite' (see the link above) must feature in any collector's archive . The production supports DTS technology as well as presenting beautifully on any DVD player...... region free by the way!
