Trombonist Rob Stoneback seems to be a trombonist of the old school, big sound, loves to swing and probably sees the Basie Band as a strong influence. You could say, who needs a guest when Stoneback is around. Well, on this occasion the guest is well chosen. Bill Watrous has a more subtle approach, plays more notes perhaps and despite his smoother tone can and does develop an impressive intensity in his playing. The contrast between these two musicians is what makes this CD so interesting, so entertaining and swing so impressively..
I regret I do not recognise the sidemen in this excellent big band, what I do know is that Bethlehem PA, should feel blessed to have a big band of such quality. The two vocalists, Michael Condella and Ms.Robin Work, for once add to the quality of the band. Something I appreciate as, so many potentially excellent recordings are devalued by indifferent vocalists. There are four vocal tracks out of thirteen.
The other plus to this recording is the good fortune the band has enjoyed with the services of an excellent team of sound engineers. The sound is warm and full, with just the right amount of reverb.
A swinging session, a worthy addition to anyone's collection.
