WITH RESPECT TO STAN: LA 8601-NS

NORTH TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY ONE O'CLOCK LAB BAND

Supporters of the Stan Kenton Orchestra will not need me to tell them that altruistically he want to do what he could to promote and enhance jazz education in schools. His library is now housed in the archives at the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS. It is also well known that the major touring bands felt comfortable taking young musicians out of the school and into their touring bands. If you have an opportunity to check the backgrounds of major studio players throughout the United States Of America, you will find many ex students.

Director Neil Slater decided to plunder the library of arrangements that appeared during a certain era. The sound at this time was strongly influenced by the 'one of a kind' soloists who were in the band. Winding, Rosolino, Manne, Bernhardt, Pepper, Rogers, Sims and more. I am probably not alone in treasuring that era and the fact that I was lucky enough to experience some of it in live performance.

This album has been in my catalogue before, but it may have been missed. It is my contention that there has been no finer tribute to Kenton, no assembly of musicians could ever better this stunning display. This is not a slavish replication. The arrangements are those used by the original band, the soloists are of today and in context..

Unreservedly I would recommend this outstanding album.
