MICHAEL PAGAN BIG BAND
PAG'S GROOVE
Not too sure about the genesis of this band. What I do know is it was recorded at University Colorado at Greeley in 2004. I know a few of the musicians from some early collegiate albums, but this is not a college big band. The music has an extra-ordinary quality of sounding very relaxed but at the same time, careful listening reveals a quality and depth that suggests that the album has been drawn from an exclusive archive of defining performances, in short there is a timeless quality about it. I would hope that presenters, would not just play this album once and consign it to the back of the collection. It could almost be a reference point alongside other seminal performances.
This is contemporary big band jazz at it's most rewarding, reminding the listener perhaps of the music of Thad Jones and occasionally of Brookmeyer in a less capricious mood.
A highly recommended recording for the discriminating listener and accessible enough to draw in the casual listener. Acceptable on several levels..... a must have!
