Recently this trumpet playing LA icon released a DVD 'Gathered Around' which featured another live performance; including some of the tracks played on this truly wonderful CD. If you do not have this DVD, click HERE to find a copy. Understand the CD is a different performance not a CD of the DVD.
The CD lacks only the visual element, the performance suggests to me that this well be one of the all to rare collections that will acquire the epithet 'classic'.
The CD is contemporary big band swing of the highest order. Generously written, a big fat sound devolving to the intimacy of a small group on occasions, a very comfortable marriage of small group and big band sounds.
Steve is not nicknamed 'The Poet' for nothing, the music is emotional, passionate and does not rely on blazing brass to create effects. You will find yourself carried along , allow the intensity of the writing rather than raw power, to thrill you.
