Probably the finest arranger and composer of big band music ; Bill Holman's music has been stretching, teasing and exciting musicians and fans for many years. He rehearses his Loas Angeles big band just about every week, such is the iconic status of the man, that few refuse an opportunity to be at a rehearsal. To accepted as a regular member is the ultimate accolade.
Bill Holman travels to Europe regularly to conduct his music. Occasionally a recording appears. This 1993 was a popular choice for many from my list and is appearing again due to renewed interest.
The SWR Big Band has gained a reputation for its ability to perform the music of many arrangers. Note the word perform! It is relatively easy for this standard of musician to play the notes but often a failrly accurate and even lifeless performance follows. This has never happened with the SWR. Recently CDs with Bob Mintzer, Bob Florence, Sammy Nestico, Rob McConnel and many more have been lauded as some of the finest demonstrations of the big band phenomenon. Justifiably the SWR has a world wide reputation as one of the finest.
Some may be used to Bill Holman's performance of his music on some long gone recordings. What is refreshing is the different take soloists have. This recording has every virtue of what we hope for. It is dynamic, exciting, a very standard of playing and soloing. I cannot recommend this CD highly enough.
Generally the style of the music selected is Willis as he is today. The power and the majesty are still evident, his music poses new creative opportunities for the muscians and it swings powerfully.
I have copies in the UK.
