The debut CD, recorded in San Antonio in July of 1965. There is a link to the label above . The band was formed around 10 months prior to the recording and was the result of a certain amount of pursuasion by the musicians involved.
One thing I would like clarify: the website above mentions the eclectic nature of the band's library; suggesting that it features some avante-garde music!! I am aware that many site visitors find my descriptions of the style of a band helpful. Strike 'avante-garde' please! The music scans straight ahead jazz swing music including bebop and ballads and never deviates from the need to have form and pulse.
Gerry Gibbs( drums) looks to his father for support and encouragement and in no way is trying to capitalise on the success of the Terry Gibbs Big Band. The music is arranged by Gerry and for the most part original compositions.
This is a dynamic and exciting band with a will to have unrestrained fun playing. There is evidence of this in the first track 'Caribbean Song' which is based on a very simple repeated riff punctuating the solos. It does not stretch the arranger but allows the soloists to blow.
Having attracted your attention , the band explores the more eloquent depths of the library providing thoughtful explorations of the music of Toyner, Hancock, Brecker and Gerry Gibbs. Joan Carroll takes the pressure of with some very attractive vocalising.
I have copies in the UK.
