Very much in the spirit of Gene rather than mimicing the icon. This is an affectionate tribute to G.K., with the leader sitting behind his Slingerland drums driving through original accurately transcribed arrangements. Surprisingly he avoids the lengthy drum solo and concentrates on lighting a fire underneath an excellent group so that it can relax and compliment the spirit of the era. Dare I say that technically the leader avoids over laying his performance with modern techniques.

In conversation once with Louie Bellson, he said " You know I can't do what you guys do". He was comparing himself to L.B. and Buddy Rich. Bellson then reminded us that maybe it was correct, but he could create more excitement with a couple of notes than many can do with all that technique he reckon he lacked. Gene was a one off and an essential building block that which allows us to enjoy the work of many of today's fine drummers.

Another fact that impresses me that all the solos are contextual and I appreciate that. By that I mean the approach is appropriate to the era celebrated. In that case it means a stompin', swinging big band.

So you want swing? You want to listen an excellent kicking big band? Well this may be what you are looking for.. See the BUY NOW link here.
